Leaves and Lizards is a nice family run accommodation in the hills overlooking Arenal Volcano. It is somewhat of a trek into the tourist town of La Fortuna, but with a rental car it is easily manageable. It is worth doing taking the 25 minute drive for the view that you get. It overlooks the volcano and has an amazing view. Unfortunately it was mostly cloudy when we were there and it took us a few days to see the volcano. When we did see it, it wasn’t active, but that is just bad luck on our side I guess. Should you go to Leaves and Lizards and have clear skies and an active volcano then it would be an amazing sight. Steve and Debbie the owners of Leaves and lizards are very friendly and will help plan any excursions you might be interested in. I especially like the Cano Negro tour with Giovanni who is an excellent guide. The accommodation itself is a private cabin which overlooks the volcano and also an area of land that Steve and Debbie are reforesting. There are already some mature fruit trees, which were regularly visited by Toucans whilst we were there. There are also some nice flowers planted near the cabins which were frequented by humming birds. I could not fault the accommodation or the location. However as a wildlife photographer I was generally disappointed, with the Arenal area, except for the Cano Negro tour. I imagine it does offer some great landscape opportunities though, especially when the volcano is active. It is also a family destination and there are numerous activities available in the surrounding area.
